Chapter 14

Walking was proving tricky as I left the apartment with Fire Fang still in his hellhound form.

After I’d learned how obnoxious I’d been thanks to that tainted candy, I felt even more uncomfortable around him. We’d kissed? Was that me acting out some secret desire? After all, you’d have to be wearing blinkers, standing in a darkened room with your back turned, not to notice how attractive Fire Fang was when he was a mortal. And frustratingly, he was just my type, just like I’d admitted to him.

But I wasn’t thinking about his pirate-esque physique, nor the tattoos, nor his messy dark hair. I had no interest in running my fingers through it.

At least, when he was back on all four paws, there was no temptation. Maybe he’d get stuck in his hellhound form again. I had no idea how long he’d be able to flip back and forth between mortal and hellhound. Was that even safe to do?

Having a hellhound partner came with advantages, but now I knew who he was, there couldn’t be a partnership going forward. I had to do the right thing by Fire Fang, even if that meant casting him out of Witch Haven and making sure he forgot me.

I stumbled, still woozy from the tainted candy I’d gorged on yesterday.

Fire Fang leaned against my leg to keep me steady. “We don’t have to do this now. We can visit Sherry later. It’ll take a while for that candy to get out of your system, so you could be tempted if you’re near more of it. I’m still getting faint urges, and it’s been out of my system longer than yours.”

“As much as I’d like to put my feet up and not worry about Sherry blowing apart the magical community with her miscreant candy, we don’t have the luxury of taking a day off. We have to stop her right away.”

He huffed out his frustration. “Just don’t be surprised if you’re tempted when you get to her store.”

“Sherry’s candy won’t stop me. And neither will she. It’s no surprise the villagers are so obsessed with what she’s giving out if it makes them feel like this, though. I keep getting vivid images of bags of candy. It’s a struggle to think about anything else.”

“I was the same,” Fire Fang said. “It’s dangerous stuff.”

“Which is why we can’t put this off a second longer. Sherry should be shutting the store around this time, so there won’t be many customers to worry about. We’ll confront her about the candy, tell her we know everything, and see what she lets slip out. There’s a dark witch hiding under that pink fluffy exterior, and we have to expose her.”

“We’ll get her to talk, even if I have to shake her a few times to make it happen. That witch isn’t destroying our home.”

I glanced at him. Fire Fang seemed so certain his place was with me, but I wasn’t sure. And I was even less certain now I knew how complicated his life was.
